Letters mailed to property owners with "substantial damage"

Advisories Posted on March 13, 2023

Watch this video about the rapid assessments conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers on all structures in FMB after Hurricane Ian hit.

In October 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers evaluated all structures on Fort Myers Beach to determine which required demolition (termed "substantially damaged') and which required further assessment of damage. The evaluation helps the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) document the number of structures that were destroyed for funding and flood insurance rate purposes.

The Town has just sent letters to property owners whose structures were determined to be substantially damaged by the Corps' assessments. Some of these structures have already been demolished or are in process. This letter gives guidance to property owners about permitting requirements if they plan to rebuild, the elevation of structures that are required under current codes, and the National Flood Insurance Program.

Here is a list of the 1000-plus addresses.
