The Town of Fort Myers Beach and Lee County are fortunate to be home to one of Florida’s largest populations of manatees.
Recently, Town Council passed an ordinance changing the back bay into a Manatee Idle Speed Zone every month of the year instead of just for a few months out of the year. This ordinance came about after a group of engaged citizens championed the change to better protect the manatees that inhabit the waters around the Town. Town Manager Roger Hernstadt called the citizen’s actions a “model case” and a “good civics lesson” for how citizens and government can work together effectively.
