Town, County receive $20 million

 for several recovery projects on FMB 


In notices received today, the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) and Director Kevin Guthrie announced that more than $20 million total has been awarded to the Town and the County for projects on Fort Myers Beach to help recover from the destruction that Hurricane Ian wreaked in September 2022.

 

“We are grateful to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Legislature, FDEM, Director Guthrie and Lee County for their support in our recovery from Hurricane Ian,” said Mayor Dan Allers. “This funding will help us continue the ongoing work to restore our Town’s natural and physical assets.” 

Specifically, the funding includes:

  • $8 million grant for beach renourishment
  • $5 million, 0% loan following Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) projects
  • $7.76 million to Lee County for sea turtle lighting on Estero Boulevard (Lee County owns Estero Boulevard)

 Friends of the Mound House donate $10,000 to replace museum store items 

Jim Steele and Ellen Vaughn presented a check for $10,000 to Mound House today at the Town Council meeting to cover museum store items lost during Hurricane Ian. Jim and Ellen are leaders of Friends of the Mound House, a non-profit fundraising organization that helps to support the operation of the Mound House.

Fort Myers Beach is working to coordinate services and build resiliency for individuals, families, and entities adversely impacted by Hurricane Ian through the development of a long-term recovery plan.  The purpose of the recovery plan is to engage the community and create a vision for Fort Myers Beach while reimagining the systems and landscape of the community. 

This on-line survey has been developed to allow for participation by Fort Myers Beach residents and to provide public input for the recovery plan.  

Please take part in helping to plan the future vision of a more resilient Fort Myers Beach by completing this survey by Monday, October 9.
