Sand and bags are available behind Town Hall for residents to fill
We are monitoring Tropical Storm Fred and, as of this newsletter's distribution, it looks as if it will bring rain and possible localized flooding in low-lying areas this weekend.
If residents would like sand bags to be ready just in case, FREE sand and bags to fill are available behind Town Hall. Please bring shovels as those are not supplied. Town Hall is located at 2525 Estero Boulevard.

Although it looks right now as if Tropical Storm Fred will not reach hurricane status, it's a good time to remind everyone that hurricane re-entry passes that are YELLOW and PURPLE and issued in previous years are STILL VALID.

Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier to close temporarily for maintenance on August 16
FROM LEE COUNTY:
The Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier at Lynn Hall Memorial Park, 950 Estero Blvd., will be closed for about three weeks beginning Monday, Aug. 16, so that a contractor can resurface the entire concrete deck.
The pier is expected to re-open in time for Labor Day weekend.
All amenities at Lee County’s Lynn Hall Park except the pier remain open with regular hours. Amenities at Lynn Hall Park include shelters with grills, restrooms with changing facilities and accessible beach access. Parking is $2 per hour.
The concrete deck is resurfaced about every 10 to 15 years. The work is funded through the Tourist Development Tax, which is assessed on short-term lodging.

Construction of new traffic signal at Old San Carlos and Estero Boulevards is set to begin on
Monday, August 16Motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures and delays in the area and some work taking place at night. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor, and will be managing traffic. Two signalization mast arms and associated equipment are to be installed.
The Local Agency Program (LAP) through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is the funding source for this project. Estimated cost is $776,511. This is the Town’s first LAP project since certification was obtained in 2020.
Lee County is also planning to install a second new signal at the intersection of Crescent Street and Estero Boulevard starting approximately in May of 2022. This signal is also to be completed with FDOT funding.

UPDATES BY AREA
Segment 5 & 6 - Albatross Street to the end of the island
Albatross Street to just south of Santini Plaza - North and south bound traffic is shifted to the bay side while crews install conduit, storm drainage and sidewalk and rebuild the roadway on the beach side.
South of Santini Plaza to the south end of the island - North and south bound traffic is shifted to the beach side while crews install storm drainage, sidewalk, and driveway aprons, and rebuild the roadway on the bay side.
- Friday, 8/13 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., crews will continue to pave the closed northbound lane and side street tie-ins from south of Santini Plaza to the south end of the island.
- Motorists may experience momentary delays while crews move materials in and out of the work area.
- Motorists at driveways and side streets may experience ingress/egress delays when the paver is at your driveway or side street.
- Buccaneer Drive will be intermittently reduced to one lane at Estero Boulevard while crews install storm drainage.
- Motorists should use caution and flaggers will be present to assist.
- Tarpon Road will be closed intermittently from Estero Boulevard to Buccaneer Drive while crews transition the side street apron to Estero Boulevard.
- Residential access will be provided from Buccaneer Drive and Lagoon Road.
Crews will continue to restore the outfall right-of-way at the Santa Maria Condominium.

It is an URGENT time for the public to be vocal with the Army Corps of
Engineers regarding the Corps' proposed plan that will guide water
releases from Lake Okeechobee for the next decade. Captains for Clean Water has set up an email template
for the public to send messages. |

|
The Town of Fort Myers Beach is urging the public to send messages to the Army Corps of Engineers NOW to request modifications to the draft operating plan for releasing water from Lake Okeechobee. These releases flow into the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf causing harmful algae blooms that kill fish and foliage and impact the public's s health as well as the Town’s economy.
During a Monday, July 26 meeting with the Corps, Fort Myers Beach Mayor Ray Murphy joined with mayors of other municipalities in Lee County to lobby for changes in the plan to have the releases “be less water in summer, more water in winter.”
“It’s incumbent upon everybody who lives down here or has any stake in it anywhere to be vocal about this situation to the Army Corps of Engineers and let them know that we don’t want all that water. We want water when we need it and we don’t want the water when we don’t need it,” Mayor Murphy said. "Our concern over here on the West Coast is that we're going to be taking the lion's share of the water on these releases when it happens."

The Town’s committees exist to advise Town Council about Bay Oaks Recreational Campus, Mooring Field, Mound House, Newton Beach Park, finances, marine resources, nuisance abatement, environmental and historic preservation, and public safety.
Openings: - Audit Committee – monitors audits, reviews financial statements prior to the completion of the audit, reviews the results of any audit, evaluates proposed corrective action and insures that corrective action is carried out, evaluates auditor performance
- Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC) – assists the Local Planning Agency and the Historic Preservation Advisory Board with historic preservation matters
- Local Planning Agency (LPA) - further the welfare of the citizens of town by helping to promote a better, more positive community environment and to ensure that the unique, natural characteristics of the island are preserved.
