Budget process continues on September 21

The first hearing for the Fiscal Year 2021 budget was Thursday, September 10. The final budget hearing will be on Monday, Sept. 21, at 5:01 p.m.

One important fact about the budget is that the proposed millage rate is recommended to remain at the current year rate of .95.

It will provide the revenue needed to continue current levels of service and repay the loan to improve Times Square, Bay Oaks Recreational Campus, and Bayside Park.

Utility Manager Pat Harper retires

Pat Harper, Utility Manager, retired in August

Utility Billing Manager Pat Harper was surprised with a luncheon (social distance style) in honor of her service to the Town and her recent retirement. Pat has been well-known throughout ten years with the Water Department for her friendly and caring demeanor with residents and colleagues. She will be missed!

Congratulations to new Utility Billing Manager, Maggi Mazard, who was promoted from Utility Billing Clerk after two years of service in the Department.

What is a mooring field?

You might have heard that the Town operates Matanzas Harbor Mooring Field, but have you ever wondered exactly what a mooring field is?

It is a legally defined area within a body of water. In Florida, a mooring field is established by local ordinance, codifying a management plan that regulates activity within the field. Customers of the field are assigned a mooring and can then secure their boat to the mooring buoy which is attached to permanent anchors. Mooring buoys provide an organized and secure way to protect both boats and the environment.

The Town maintains a mooring field with 70 spaces for boats, and has plans to expand the field and enhance the customer check in process along with upland services.

Out with the old, in with the new

Town acquires new maintenance boat for $8k

To maintain Matanzas Pass Mooring Field and perform other work in the back bay and on the Gulf, Harbormaster Austin Gilchrist and his team were using a 19-year-old boat that had seen better days. Recently, a new boat and trailer were purchased for $8,000 for the team's work. The Public Works Department has been equipping it with salvageable parts from the old boat. Keep a lookout for the team on the water!
