Two dredging projects at opposite ends of the island
The Army Corps of Engineers is beginning a dredging project on the north end of the island in Matanzas Pass near Bowditch Point. This project will involve pumping sand from Matanzas Pass. Because this is not a Town project, all inquiries related to it should be addressed to:

On the south end of the island, a second dredging project was acted upon by Town Council at the August 17 meeting. This project is for proposed monitoring of possible dredging in Buccaneer Lagoon, in the Laguna Shores neighborhood, and is resident-supported. Town Council authorized one monitoring event, with the cost not to exceed $3,400, and is requiring a subsequent report on the status.
The purpose of the project is to monitor the performance of the entrance channel to Laguna Shores, dredged in December of 2012 and last monitored in January of 2015. The purpose of the monitoring is to document any infill rates and estimate when the next maintenance dredging should occur. The engineer is recommending monitoring on a bi-annual basis.
