Town Council Approves Budget Enacting a Public Service Tax

On September 26, 2011 the Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved the annual budget which includes a public service tax on electric service within Fort Myers Beach corporate limits. This public service tax will become effective on April 1, 2012.

What is a public service tax?
Local governments are authorized to levy a public service tax on the purchase of electricity, metered natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas either metered or bottled, manufactured gas either metered or bottles, and water service.  Fort Myers Beach has implemented the public service tax only on the purchase of electricity.  The tax shall be levied only upon purchases within the corporate limits of the Town.

What if I have a Fort Myers Beach mailing address, but I’m not within the corporate limits of the Town?
If your monthly electric bill shows the public service tax and you do not live within the corporate limits of the Town, notify us at the address, phone number or e-mail below.  Once we verify that the address is not within the corporate limits of the Town, we will notify Florida Power and Light for you.

How will the Town spend the proceeds?
Funds collected from the Public Service Tax are considered general revenue for the Town and will be placed in the General Fund for operations and capital projects.  The Council approved the new public service tax on electricity and reduced property taxes dollar for dollar

Will the tax be only on Fort Myers Beach electric power customers or will it apply to anyone
else?
Only Fort Myers Beach will be affected. The Town has no authority to go outside the corporate limits.

What is considered a taxable utility? Is there a consideration of expanding this to water?
The public service tax can be applied to the purchase of electricity, metered natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas either metered or bottled, manufactured gas either metered or bottles, and water service.  The purchase of electricity is the only utility subject to the public service tax for the Town.

What are the actual % amounts of the tax?
The percentage rate is 10%.  The tax does not apply to the fuel charges on your electric bill.

How will amounts be determined? Who will do the collecting?
Totals are determined by the utility companies based on usage or volume as indicated on the utility bills.   The utility company will collect monthly fees and remit them to the Town on a quarterly basis.

Don't property taxes already pay for these services?
The Town receives property tax based on the value of real estate within the corporate limits of the Town.   The Council approved the new public service tax on electricity and reduced property taxes dollar for dollar.
