Reminder It's sea turtle nesting season Make sure blinds are closed at dusk and lights are not visible from the beach. Light can disorient turtles from nesting on the beach and hatchlings from travelling the correct direction toward the water.

Congratulations to Cindy Johnson, recipient of the annual Mulholland Stewardship Award
Cindy was recognized by Town Council at the regular meeting on May 16.
Cindy is a dedicated volunteer with Turtle Time, Inc., as well as an educated advocate in general for Estero Island’s natural environment. She volunteers countless hours with the pop up educational booth that is managed by the Marine Resources Task Force.
The Mulholland Award is given annually to individuals, businesses, or non-profit organizations that voluntarily promote preservation of our community’s natural resources. The award is named in honor of former Mayor John Mulholland who is credited with creating the Town’s Marine Resources Task Force.
In the picture with Town Council, Cindy is in front surrounded by, left to right, Town Councilor Dan Allers, Vice Mayor Rexann Hosafros, Mayor Ray Murphy, and Town Councilor Jim Atterholt. Town Councilor Bill Veach nominated Cindy and he participated in the meeting virtually.

“Sea Turtles: New Research”
We are excited to welcome Kelly Sloan to the Mound House on June 14 at 5:30 p.m. as a guest lecturer.

Kelly started working for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Marine Turtle Conservation Program in 2007, where she helped manage all aspects of sea turtle conservation in South Carolina. One of the main components of the program involved coordinating over 30 projects with 1,000+ volunteers in the statewide sea turtle nest protection and stranding network.
While working at the SCDNR she completed a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Policy. Her thesis focused on using barnacle growth as an indicator of the onset and duration of Debilitated Turtle Syndrome in loggerhead sea turtles.
In the spring of 2013, Kelly joined a team of scientists on Long Island to characterize the response of endangered piping plovers to habitats created by Hurricane Sandy. Kelly accepted her current position as coordinator of the SCCF Sea Turtle Program in December of 2013.
